1942: New Tribes Mission
(NTM) was founded by Paul Fleming. Paul Fleming had previously worked as an independent missionary in Malaysia,
reaching unreached tribal peoples for Christ. Seeing this as a great need
in missions, Paul desired to provide an organisation through which missionaries
could move out among unreached people groups. He and six other men made
that vision a reality by starting NTM. This led to the first pioneer group
of NTM missionaries setting sail for Bolivia, South America in November
of that year.
1943: The
first NTM Headquarters was set up in Chicago, USA. At the same time, several NTM missionaries were attempting
to contact the uncivilised Ayore group in Bolivia.
1944:
On January 12, the startling news came back that five of the men were missing.
These five men had been killed, however the facts were not revealed until years later. Despite these seeming setbacks, missionaries were more determined than ever to see the souls of the Ayore people reached with the Gospel.
1946: The
work steadily developed, even though there were other casualties along
the way... one such incident being a devastating fire at the first Missions
Institute in Fouts Springs, California, just a year after its beginning.
Tragically, a baby died in this fire which entirely destroyed two dormitories. |
